CBD is all the rage right now. You’ve probably heard many people boast about its miraculous healing qualities, but do you know what defines CBD and why so many people find it effective?
In short, CBD is a completely legal, naturally derived chemical from the cannabis plant.
It is typically consumed in the form of oil, either sublingually (absorbed under the tongue) or swallowed. However, CBD oil can be mixed into a wide variety of forms, and might also commonly be put in foods, drinks, or topical products.
The acronym CBD formally stands for “cannabidiol”.
Cannabidiol is one of many cannabinoids present in cannabis. In total, there are over a hundred cannabinoids found in cannabis which all have varying effectiveness and uses.
You might be familiar with another popular cannabinoid, THC.
While both THC and CBD can offer similar benefits in terms of pain relief, depression and anxiety management, and sleep enhancement, they diverge in a few key ways:
First of all, CBD, unlike THC, is not psychoactive. This means that you can enjoy the benefits of CBD with full mental clarity, and without the “high” we commonly think of when we think of cannabis use.
In fact, there are regulations put in place to ensure that no CBD products are psychoactive. In order for CBD to be sold legally, it must contain a high CBD content and low THC content.
The two chemicals also differ in what they are typically referred to in popular culture. THC has many names–you know it as marijuana, or possibly weed, pot, or a number of other nicknames.
CBD might also be referred to as hemp. Technically, the chemical CBD is derived from the hemp plant, which is a specific type of cannabis plant (as is marijuana).
The scientific differentiation between hemp and marijuana is not always 100% clear, but it usually indicated which main chemicals we derive from them–CBD or THC.
Typically, hemp qualifies as any cannabis plant with less than 0.3% THC content in it. Conversely, marijuana plants contain more than 0.3% of THC.
Hemp also refers to sterile parts of the cannabis plant, including sterilized seeds, stems, stalks, and roots, while marijuana is viable for reproduction. These viable parts of marijuana includes seeds, leaves, and flowers.
CBD extract is legal to varying extents in all U.S. States. While some states, such as Alabama, require a medical license with proof of specific medical conditions to use CBD, others allow more lax access to CBD usage. In many states, including California and Oregon, adults over the age of 21 can buy approved CBD oil and other products with no license required.
Each state also has varying regulations on the amount of THC and CBD that can be present in CBD products.
Because traces of THC are often still present in CBD oil, states put regulations on the maximum amount of THC allowed in a product. This maximum might range anywhere from 0.3% to 5%, depending on the state.
Some states might also place requirements on the minimum amount of CBD allowed in a produc to be classified as a legal CBD product. Again, this varies by state but typically ranges anywhere from 5% to 15%. Some states have not specified any minimum percentage requirement on the amount of CBD present in CBD products.
CBD being non-psychoactive and completely legal offers a lot of explanation to its popularity. Now that you have had a small look into CBD, you might wonder what conditions and goals it can be used for.
There are many reasons why people turn to CBD, but most CBD users aim to improve their mental and/or physical well being. CBD can help ease physical pain, emotional distress, and even help you sleep.
