By now, you’ve learned quite a bit about CBD. You know what CBD is, why so many people take it, the basics of the endocannabinoid system, and how CBD effectively manages chronic pain and a variety of other symptoms.
However, you may still be left with a number of questions about CBD.
Unfortunately, discussions surrounding CBD often include many misconceptions, misunderstandings, and unfair stigmas. This can even lead to doubts about the validity of CBD, despite the many studies that demonstrate its success.
Because some information about CBD can be misleading, it’s always important to ask questions and examine any hesitations people might have about CBD products.
FAQs
With this in mind, we want to clear the air. We’ve compiled answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about CBD in hopes that we can help you become better informed.
As we mentioned in Chapter 1, CBD is legal in the United States. However, specific regulations may vary amongst states. With the exception of a few states, any hemp-sourced CBD product with a THC content of 0.3% or lower is legal for any adult over the age of 21. Some states also allow CBD sourced from the marijuana plant.
If you want to know more about the accessibility and legality of CBD in your own community, there are a number of quick-guides that indicate CBD laws by state.
The answer really depends on the person, and what they are looking to get out of CBD.
CBD oil and tinctures, taken orally, are widely thought of as the most potent and direct way of consuming CBD. If you want to reduce anxiety or get a better night’s sleep, taking CBD drops might be a great option for you. Someone taking CBD for chronic pain might also benefit from a tincture. Or, they might experience greater relief by applying topical CBD products directly to painful areas.
There is a large array of CBD products available, so many that we made dedicated an entire chapter of our CBD Guide to the different ways of consuming CBD. Check out Chapter 8 to learn what format of CBD is best for you.
CBD does not cause the “munchies”, a common side effect of THC. But it might increase some users’ appetites in other ways. CBD often reduces nausea, so for those who suffer from an upset stomach and lack of appetite, CBD could increase the desire to eat.
I heard that CBD can turn into THC inside the body. Is this true?
No.
A 2016 study has lead to many false assumptions about what happens to THC inside the stomach. A team of researchers simulated gastrointestinal fluid and added CBD, concluding that the acid converted the compound into THC. However, this experiment was done in a controlled environment and did not take into account any of the intricate factors at play in the environment of a real human stomach.
THC has never been detected in any human trials of subjects taking CBD.
Pure CBD will not cause a failed drug test. However, some CBD products contain higher amounts of THC, and another cannabinoid, CBG. THC and CBG are known to produce positive drug test results.
If you are concerned about drug testing, don’t be discouraged about taking CBD. You simply need to be conscientious about what products you use. Some low quality CBD products have a higher THC content than advertised. A high quality, reputable CBD brand will have low THC content and should not infringe on drug test results.
Will CBD interact with any other medications I am taking?
It depends on the medication. Because CBD works with the endocannabinoid system and thus the body’s regulatory processes, it certainly can interact with some other drugs.
If you have a preexisting condition for which you take daily medication, discuss taking CBD with your doctor.
Unfortunately, there is no clear cut way to find your perfect CBD dosage right off of the bat. Everybody responds to CBD differently, so the answer varies depending on the person. Your reaction will also depend on the potency of the product you use.
Once you start using CBD consistently, you will likely encounter your optimal dosage. Factors such as your weight, unique body chemistry, and the condition for which you are taking CBD will influence the proper dosage for you.
To be cautious, you can always start at a conservative dosage. For oral drops, people take an average of 10 to 50mgs per day. If 10mg does not feel like enough, you can work your way up.
How do I know if a CBD brand is trustworthy?
Firstly, CBD from the U.S. is by far the most dependable.
You will also want to look for a brand’s certifications and testings. Some brands publicize their tests to verify that they have the appropriate CBD and THC content, along with analyzing other cannabinoids present.
Brands that are open about the contents of their products are likely more trustworthy than brands that seem to be hiding any details.
Now that we’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions about CBD, you might be left wondering why so many misconceptions about CBD exist in the first place. Why is CBD so misunderstood?
The most logical explanation is not anything to do with CBD itself, but rather, stigmas surrounding marijuana.
As we mentioned previously, perhaps the other most popular cannabinoid, THC, comes from marijuana. Hemp is classified as a cannabis plant with lower than 0.3% THC content, while a marijuana plant has over 0.3% THC. Many of the stereotypes surrounding cannabis in general actually stem from common effects that the chemical THC has on the body, not the cannabis plant itself.
Assumptions that hemp or CBD might make you inebriated, increase your appetite, impair your motor function, cause hallucinations, or decrease your level of alertness are all misguided and influenced by THC. Of course, it is still important to be fully informed and take precautions when consuming any medicinal product, including CBD. However, taking CBD does not have the same impacts on the body and mind as THC.
Marijuana has a tumultuous history in the U.S., making any discussions about cannabis more difficult than they should be. Increasing our knowledge about the amazing potential of CBD can mitigate the confusion.
